Meeting Thursday, November 5, 2020, 7 p.m.  Social "half-hour" will start at 6:30 pm: 

The coming meeting on Thursday, Nov 5th will be a presentation given by Sarah Betti.  Sarah is a PhD candidate at UMass Amherst.  Her presentation will be on her Graduate research with circumstellar disks around young stars and brown dwarfs. The meeting will open at 6:30 for conversation with the presentation starting at 7:00. This will be Sarah’s first time speaking to our club, it’s great to have her!

 

 Following our main presentation, we will have input from club members on their activities in the past month, things observed, club news and announcements and finally hear from Russ who will be showing us through Andromeda. Should be an exciting meeting!

When normal life resumes we will hope to continue to have use of the Planetarium.  However, it remains to be seen how the University will choose to allow outside groups to use their facilities.  Tay tuned for more updates, but for now we will rely on Zoom.

Thurs, Dec. 3, 2020 - Dr. Aileen Yingst, Planetary Geologist at Planetary Sciences Institute, Tucson.  TBD - Curiosity; Dawn Mission to Ceres & Vesta; new lunar mission

Thurs, Jan. 5, 2021 - Hands-on demonstration on observing basics and telescope terms and devices: focal length, field of view, eyepieces, collimation, celestial coordinates, using a Telrad, star charts, etc.  Actual topics to be determined based on member feedback

Thurs, Feb. 3, 2021 - Carroll Iorg, President of the Astronomical League, describing AL programs, technical help, and ways to become involved.

Thurs, Mar. 4, 2021 - Dr. Neil Comins, Professor of Physics & Astronomy, UMO, author of "Heavenly Errors - Misconceptions about the Real Nature of the Universe"

Thurs, April 1, 2021 - Dr. Chris Magri,  Associate Professor of Physics and Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences, UMaine Farmington - Asteroid research through radio astronomy
